As part of Surfers On Mission Nicaragua, I get really excited when teams come from outside of Nicaragua. Thinking that they will get some great surf, which they do, and thinking that they will be a blessing to the orphanage and community, which they are, they leave here having their own lives touched by God, with a renewed fire to seek Him and serve the Lord with passion. Such were a group of five young guys who came down from Topsail N.C. They were invited down by a young couple from Topsail who are involved with SOM. For six days they helped plant fruit trees and poured a driveway. They hung out and played soccer with the orphan boys and got involved in the community by helping at a feeding program. They went to the dump of Managua and played with the kids at their school. And, last but not least, they rode what was most likely the best waves of their lives. Here’s their story:
A group of five young guys from Topsail Beach, NC came to Nicaragua for a week. We put up new window screens in the infant dorm, helped build an entrance driveway, helped with plumbing problems, and watered fruit trees. We also enjoyed playing soccer and ping-pong with the boys at the orphanage.
One day we went to La Chureca, a neighborhood in the Managua City Dump. Open Hearts ministry runs a school in the neighborhood to be a light in the middle of a dark place of filth, drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. We visited the school and played with the children during recess. The children’s faces showed that they felt loved by our group!
Of course we also had time to enjoy the surf. We got some great waves and had a great time of fellowship. The trip was an eye-opening, life-changing week! At the end of the week, the guys all said they were “fired up” for the Lord and that they “want to continue this at home.” Praise God!
“The boys had a great time while visiting with you guys. It was truly life changing!”
“THANK YOU for hosting the boys and making available the wonderful experience they encountered. They were very moved by their visit… God is definitely working through you guys in many ways.”
“They had the most amazing time–and I think they all wanted to stay much longer.”
“Thank you so much for what sounds like an incredible week… God is doing a great thing through you.”
“This past week was so much fun. It really did change my life. I really saw God come to life, through his word and everything happening around us. I have already seen a difference in the way we encourage and talk to one another and, since I have been back I have been reading and praying much more than I did before I left. I am so thankful for this trip and everything it brought about.”
